How does a water softener work?
Alternating water softeners are designed to provide customers who need uninterrupted soft water. Alternating units are controlled by meters and remove calcium and magnesium from hard water by replacing them with sodium ions.

  1. Hard water enters your home from a main water pipe or well, and travels to both water softeners.
  2. Resin beads in the tanks attract and hold onto hard water minerals, removing them from the water.
  3. When one tank has reached its capacity and needs to regenerate, the second tank will begin to soften your water and repeat. Having alternating units allows you to constantly use water and trust it will always be soft.
  4. Softened water exits the tank and flows to the plumbing throughout your home.

DID YOU KNOW…
The salt added to your water softener does not make you water soft? It is actually the tiny resin beads within the tank that filter out hard water chemicals. The salt is used to clean the resin beads during a regeneration cycle, allowing the system to continually remove hardness from your water supply.

Why do I need twin alternating water softeners?

Answer: If you have a household with more than 5 people you may want to consider alternating tanks. The biggest benefit is you’ll continuously receive soft water with no down time! If your household goes through a lot of water, you will want twin alternating tanks. During regeneration, your water softener is “paused”, and hard water would be able run through your pipes and appliances. With twin alternating tanks, this is not a problem. When one water softener tank is regenerating, the other is used to soften your water.

Twin tank systems are typically more efficient as well. They regenerate only as needed based on water consumption and capacity, using as little energy and salt as possible.
